It has a bit more rpg-elements, both for good and ill. System Shock 2: SS2 is probably the biggest influence on Prey and its gameplay. Unlike Prey there is no character building nor is there any ability to meaningfully impact the story. You constantly have to revisit different decks and areas of the base you have already explored. The level design, plot, and world actually remind me the most of Prey of any of the other games in the genre. And even with the mouse-look mod, the controls aren't the most intuitive or smooth. You really need to have a tolerance for old school looks. It's also super dated in terms of graphics. No leveling up, stat points, or ways to change how your character develops other than the equipment you find. It's not very rpg-like in the modern sense though. The gameplay is pretty great too, with lots of weapons and ammo types to approach every situation (plus fun suit mods to utilize). The exploration, level design,and storytelling actually feel super modern. And I just played it the first time two years ago so it isn't nostalgia.
